Palm prices vary with bag size, plant size, rarity, original seed prices, and other variables, and they change with time and growth. We're happy to show you a plant's performance on our property and to discuss your needs. Prices in this catalogue are indicative only. We may have various sizes in stock of a species. Archontophoenix alexandrae
King Palm or Alexander Palm
A handsome eastern Australian rainforest palm. A sheltered situation needed.
Price: From $22 for a PB18 grade.
Archontophoenix cunninghamiana
Bangalow Palm
Now becoming quite common in northern NZ, they look good if given plenty of wind shelter.
Price: From PB18s at $22+ to PB60s at $75+. Some bigger grades available.
Archontophoenix purpurea
Mt Lewis King Palm
This is the one for northern NZ. Somewhat slower than a Bangalow, but -- and this is really important in our conditions -- much more resistant to the wind. Holds its form very well in exposed sites in Auckland. Crownshaft colours vary amongst seedlings, but grayish to a wonderful pale purple. This is the one to have!

Blue Hesper Palm
A striking, if rather slow growing, palm with wonderful blue-white new leaves. Startling in form when mature and flowering! Only small grades available.

Brahea edulis
Guadelupe Palm
A lovely strong fan palm with time. Edible fruit.
Price: Small grades from $18.
Butia capitata
Wine Palm or Jelly Palm
Hardy, withstands wind well, an excellent planting around the town basin in Tauranga, bluish-toned. A fan palm that should be used much more in NZ. Nice, edible fruit with a sharp, somewhat apricot-like taste as well! (Top right in the photo.)
Price: From small PB28s at about $25 to several 75-litre landscape grade plants.
Caryota sp. 'Solitaire'
No common name
A relatively recent discovery, from the Himalayan foothills, smaller than many others in the genus, and likely to be quite cool tolerant in northern NZ. A desirable collector's item.

Chamaedorea cataractarum
Cascade or Cataract Palm
A wonderful, striking darkish green, understory palm for low level light planting. Good indoors too. PB18

Chamaedorea costaricana
Costa Rican Bamboo Palm
Slowly clumping, with lovely arching leaves. Unusually for this genus, will grow well in full or partial sun.

Chamaedorea elegans
Parlour Palm
The classic small indoor palm since the 19th Century. OK in a shady, protected spot outdoors too.

Metallic Palm
As you'd suspect from the name, an unusual blue-green leaf shade. Damp and shade loving ...

Chamaedorea microspadix
No common name
Amongst the most cold tolerant of the Chamaedoreas. Shade loving, light frosts OK. Slowly forms a clump with nice red-orange fruits in season. Understory palm or indoors.

Chamaedorea oblongata
No common name
An attractive understory palm with distinctive, but not really oblong, leaves. Grows well here. Tough, lustrous leaves. PB18 available

Chamaedorea seifrizii
Bamboo Palm
Long established as an ornamental palm. Adaptable to low light and even to considerable sun. Tolerates some drought, and occasional wet conditions. This makes it an excellent house plant. Clumps with thin ringed stems form.

Chamaedorea tepejilote

A nice ornamental. Not direct sun, but takes high light. Can be grown indoors too.

Chamaedorea woodsoniana
No common name
Extremely handsome, even striking, white-ringed stems. Needs shade, and can be big for a Chamaedorea species- up to 5 metres.

Chamaerops humilis
European Fan Palm
Very hardy fan palm, slow growing, but excellent with age. Multiple stems appear with passing years.

Dypsis baronii
No common name
One of the most successful palm introductions to NZ during the modern boom of palm interest. Small in stature, growing in both shade and sun, clumping, with beautiful yellow and blue crownshaft colours, and gracefully arching leaves, it's a necessity in the modern garden.

Dypsis decaryi
Triangle Palm
A popular ornamental now in the subtropics with a triangular crownshaft. For warm, protected sites.

Dypsis decipiens
Betefaka Palm
It's slow growing, and from dryish, rocky mountain faces in Madagascar, this is already on its way to being one of the great new palms for New Zealand. In time, it will be enormously rewarding for the adventurous gardener. Can form clumps with several stems. Hardy and frost resistant. Sometimes with a glaucous (bluish) look to the gracefully arching fronds. A strong presence.

Euterpe edulis
Jucara Palm
A very ornamental species from Brazil. Outdoors in a warm, shady, wind-protected spot. Otherwise, a good plant indoors for some years.

Howea belmoreana
No common name
Perhaps even more graceful, with its more strongly recurved (arching) fronds, than its close relative from Lord Howe Island, the Kentia Palm. Plant in groups, be patient as it slowly gathers height and impact, and always take time to admire the emerging beauty. Small plants only available.

Howea forsteriana
Kentia Palm
Wonderful indoors, and even better in stands of them outdoors, or as a specimen. So graceful and wind resistant. Slow growing, OK in mild frosts once established. Many, many more should be planted in northern NZ.

Jubaea chilensis
Chilean Wine Palm
An ultimately enormous, very hardy, feather palm, with edible fruit (small, with coconut-like flesh). Slow growing.

Linospadix monostachya
Walking Stick Palm
Slender stems, from coastal Australian rainforests, an understory palm.
Price: PB6.5 $18.
Livistona australis
Australian Cabbage Palm or Fan Palm
Good for avenue or driveway planting. Slow, but an excellent ornamental.
Price: PB28-40 $25+ depending on size.
Livistona decipiens
Weeping Cabbage Palm or Ribbon Fan Palm
A good coastal palm from Australia, where it often occurs along stream banks. Attractive ornamental.

Lytocaryum weddellianum
Wedding Palm
Lovely, delicate-foliaged understory palm from Brazilian rainforests, and very graceful.

Phoenix dactylifera
Date Palm
They won't produce edible dates in NZ, and won't be as grey-blue as they are in a hot, dry climate, but they do grow well, and are really well suited for exposed, even salt-spray affected, areas. A good ornamental for the future.

Phoenix roebelenii
Dwarf Date Palm
A very attractive small feather palm, commonplace in subtropical and warm temperate regions., which can be grown in full sun.

Ravenea glauca
No common name
It looks more delicate than it is. Actually quite tough, and exceptionally attractive. Not for wet soils, and avoid real frosts. Its time will come. Plant now for an eventually great landscaping success.

Majestic Palm
Will succeed in a sheltered spot, but give it plenty of water.

Rhapis excelsa
Lady Palm
A wonderful pot plant, and also happy outdoors anywhere in warm temperate NZ.

Rhopalostylis baueri 'Kermadec Islands'
Kermadec Nikau
A robust Nikau Palm variant, a cool tolerant subtropical. Moist soils, shade when young. A must for landscaping.

Rhopalostylis sapida
Nikau Palm
A New Zealand icon. No garden with palms in NZ should be without our own palm. Shame on you if you don't have some Nikau!

Rhopalostylis sapida 'Akaroa'
Akaroa Harbour Nikau
A robust South Island form, from south of Christchurch, coming from as far south as the species reaches on the eastern coast.

Rhopalostylis sapida 'Chatham Islands'
Chatham Islands Nikau
A very beautiful and desirable Nikau form. A distinctive medium/dark green shade, robust under wind pressure, and a truly excellent landscaping form. May be given distinct species status one day.

Rhopalostylis sapida 'Great Barrier'
Great Barrier Island Nikau
Another great offshore island form. Robust and vigorous, this is from Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. Another "must" for producing a good northern New Zealand garden with palms for structure.
Price: Varies by size. We only have a few of these, and they are (February 2009 as they go into the sales area) small PB12 size. Ideally they need more size yet, but this current entry acknowledges that we do have a few.
Rhopalostylis sapida 'Little Barrier'
Little Barrier Island Nikau
Another vigorous and robust offshore island form. Wonderful for building the structure of a subtropical garden. Still quite rare in cultivation.

Sabal minor
Dwarf Palmetto
Native to the southeastern USA. Slow growing, but very useful because it's one of the hardy, small, fairly sun-tolerant palms for NZ.

Palmetto Palm or Cabbage Palm
With blue-tinged fan leaves, a solid trunk, and good cold resistance, this will succeed here, given time.

Syagrus romanzoffiana
Queen Palm
Used around the world as a basic landscaping palm. Now becoming common in northern NZ.
Price: With the start of adult (split) leaves, in PB18-28 from $24. Bigger ones available too.
Synechanthus fibrosus
Jelly Bean Palm
From southern Mexico to central America, this is a little (to 5m eventually) palm to grow in moist shady places under overhead canopy. Use like a Chamaedorea as an understory plant. The name comes from the look of the seed-containing fruits..

Trachycarpus fortunei
Chinese Windmill Palm or Chusan Palm
Old ones abound in NZ. It responds well to water and fertilizer.

Spiny Fibre Palm

From dryish habitats in Brazil. Somewhat greyish-green fronds, and a very spiny trunk which will evoke strong reactions. Slow growing. "Spectacular" (David Jones) in flower with white bracts and masses of yellow flowers.
